This relates to what we unreasonably expect from our educators as well--as Americans we seem to be missing the concept of taking responsibility and working for the things we desire. My faith in our country rests in the knowledge that, while the type of irresponsible customer you describe may become more and more prevalent, some considerate customers with thinking minds always remain. As you say, evolution selects for beneficial traits and abandons useless ones. As you say, mere disillusionment is not enough to bring change, but there's a reason for that: it shouldn't be.
